Keeping a practise journal can help you to focus on the areas you need to work on.
A practise journal is one easy way to ensure you meet your practise goals. Setting both short term and long-term goals can help to focus music practise and having a goal to work towards adds motivation and can increase productivity. Keeping note of what you cover in each practise session can also help to discover weak spots, and areas that may need more focus.
Tips for structuring your practise journal
- Make sure you fill in your journal at each session. Consistency is the key to success!
- Start each practise session with learning outcomes. Write down what you hope to achieve from each practise session at the beginning of each session.
- Write down what you covered during each practise session. Perhaps making a grid or table to be filled in each session would be helpful. You could fill in what was covered from each practise session.
- Leave a section for reflection at the end of each practise session. Reflect on what went well, what could be improved on, and what areas you would like to continue working on in the next session.
- Choose songs that incorporate techniques you are trying to work on, and keep a list of these songs in your journal. This will give you a solid repertoire to choose from.
