Facilitated by our creative director Shay Lally, our RhythmWorks programme in association with the National Concert Hall commenced on November 16th in the studio space in the NCH.

We started with a series of drumming workshops for teachers and had the pleasure of working with many music teachers and instrumental tutors. Together we explored rhythm and covered effective teaching and learning methods for the teaching of rhythm. The workshop ended with a great buzz and renewed energy amongst the participants.

Following this, Shay delivered another series of drumming workshops called “Rhythm” –  a series of masterclasses aimed at music students. Our “Introduction to Rhythm ” programme was aimed as younger musicians; “Rhythm for Improvers” was aimed at students who have been playing for more than four years; and “Advanced Rhythm” was aimed at students with over six years’ experience.

The aim of these masterclasses was to introduce each participant to methods that drummers and percussionists use to learn rhythm. There was a strong emphasis on counting, sub-dividing and breaking rhythm down, and reading notation.

Upon completion of all masterclasses, each student could read and perform rhythms like a drummer!

Overall, the inaugural RhythmWorks drumming workshop series was a big success and we look forward to returning to the National Concert Hall in March 2017.
