The Irish Primary Music Curriculum forms part of the arts education curriculum at primary school level. In addition to music, the arts education curriculum includes visual arts and dance too.
The Irish Primary School Music Curriculum is divided into three strands:
- Listening & Responding
- Performing
- Composing
What’s the aim of each strand?
- The Listening & Responding strand emphasizes active listening to a range of pieces and styles of music
- The Performing strand focuses on the voice as it is deemed to be the first and most accessible instrument to every child
- The Composition strand aims to develop each child’s creativity as they are given a platform to express themselves
The musical elements that need to be developed within the curriculum include
- Pulse
- Duration
- Tempo
- Pitch
- Dynamics
- Structure
- Timbre
- Texture
- Style
These musical elements form musical concepts that every teacher should aim to develop during their classes. An example of one musical concept is “a sense of pulse”.
