Joanne McCabe and the students of Gorey Educate Together NS have just finished week 3 of their 6-week ‘Let’s Sing’ short music programme. All of the class groups are improving week-on-week and are starting to sound really great!

So far it’s been all about anatomy of the voice, breathing, posture and warming up. The students been developing rounds in the groups from 3rd class upwards and are exploring the role of the conductor, learning about dynamics and singing lots of fun action songs with the younger ones. Some of the pieces used in our sessions include Row Row Row your boat, The Moose Song, Penguin comes to Tea, Lil Liza Jane and Calypso.

October will see the class groups working on notation, solfa, dynamics and some basic theory. Songs on the juniors’ agenda include Tiga Layo, Abiyoyo, and You’ve got a Friend in Me; while the seniors will learn Consider Yourself and will begin to take on some Imagine Dragons songs.

Also, the school’s beautiful Yamaha piano has been brought out and given a new lease of life for Joanne’s visits. Students from the special needs units have been coming in before our sessions to have a play and sit at it. Joanne has also played for them while they enjoy having a dance around the hall!
